The VARC CAT section has 24 questions in total, and the test takers have 40 minutes in the exam to answer these questions. Of the said 24 questions, 16 questions are Reading Comprehension (RC) questions. These are question sets with a passage of about 500 words given, followed by 4 questions per passage. There are usually 2 medium passages and 2 tough passages. The questions that feature in these sets are a mixed bag of direct and inferential types. Direct questions are those which have references in the passage. Inferential questions must be answered on the basis of inferences and deductions made from the passage. All the questions in the RC subarea are MCQ questions. The verbal Ability (VA) for CAT subarea has 8 questions. Of these, 3 para-jumble questions and 3 summary questions are regular features. Among these, the 3 para-jumble questions are TITA type. The summary ones are MCQ questions. In CAT ’22, the previously regularly featured para-jumble odd statement type questions were replaced by a new format of questions. These are a spin on the traditional para-completion questions. By analyzing these questions, one can tell that these are a logical middle-ground between the para-jumble and para-completion. It is important to note that while the odd statement questions were TITA type questions, the questions of the new type are MCQ. This has effectively reduced the number of TITA questions in the VARC CAT section from 5 in the previous years to 3. It is also unclear, at the moment, if the odd statement questions have been removed from the CAT exam for the long-term. They may reappear in CAT ’23. Thus, they should continue to be a part of VA preparation.
